Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's developed Matsugen in partnership with the Matsushita brothers, three siblings from Tokyo who own soba restaurants in Hawaii and Japan. The restaurant was a favorite with New York chefs until it closed in 2011. The identity for this restaurant sought to pay respect to the craft of high end cuisine while elevating and honoring the design details of typography both in English and Japanese characters.
